These Paleo Chocolate Donuts are moist, fudgy, and wholesome — a delicious homemade alternative to store-bought treats.
I made these paleo chocolate donuts recently and they turned out even better than I expected. They have a rich, chocolatey flavor with a soft, tender crumb that reminded me of cozy weekend mornings. The recipe is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, relying on coconut flour and coconut oil for structure and moisture, and a simple coconut butter glaze for a glossy finish. If you enjoy chocolate, these are a satisfying, healthier option that still feels indulgent.
When developing the recipe I tested the donuts more than once to make sure the texture and balance of flavors were right. The batter is thicker than typical wheat-based doughs, so a silicone donut pan works really well for shaping and removing the donuts cleanly after baking. Once cooled, a quick coconut butter glaze adds a creamy, slightly sweet coating that pairs perfectly with the rich chocolate base.

Ingredients
- ½ cup coconut flour
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 4 eggs, room temperature
- ½ cup melted coconut oil
- ¼ cup maple syrup
Glaze
- ¼ cup coconut butter
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (add more to thin if desired)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan well; a silicone pan makes removing the donuts easiest.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the coconut flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda until evenly combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, melted coconut oil, and maple syrup until smooth.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until a thick batter forms. The mixture will be denser than typical cake batter — that’s normal for coconut flour recipes.
- Scoop or press the batter into the prepared donut pan. Because the batter is thick, using your hands to shape and smooth the top works well.
- Bake for about 18–21 minutes, or until the donuts are set and a toothpick comes out mostly clean. Baking time will vary slightly depending on your oven and the donut pan.
- Allow the donuts to cool completely in the pan or on a rack before glazing.
- To make the glaze, warm the coconut butter, maple syrup (or honey), and coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until fully melted and smooth. Add a little extra coconut oil if you want a thinner glaze.
- Drizzle or spread the glaze over the cooled donuts. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
Tips and Variations
- If you prefer a less sweet donut, reduce the maple syrup slightly in the batter and glaze.
- For a deeper chocolate flavor, use a high-quality Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
- To make these nut-free, double-check that your coconut products are processed in a nut-free facility and substitute sunflower oil if needed.
- Donuts can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days. Rewarm briefly before serving if chilled.
