4th of July Spritz Cookies

Looking for a festive treat to bring to your 4th of July potluck? These patriotic Spritz Cookies are exactly what you want. They are buttery, delicate, and shaped like tiny fireworks—simple to make but impressive on the buffet table.

Start with a basic Spritz Cookie dough and elevate it with red and blue food coloring. For extra sparkle, dust the finished cookies with edible glitter (often sold as “disco dust”), which adds a show-stopping shimmer without altering flavor.

Once your dough is ready, divide it into three equal portions: leave one portion natural (white), tint one portion red and one portion blue. You can use standard food coloring, but concentrated gel or icing colors give brighter results with less product.

Roll small equal portions from each colored batch into short logs about the length of your cookie press barrel. Aim for widths that will combine to fit inside the press—about 3/4 inch for each strip worked well in this example. Take one piece each of red, white, and blue and gently press them together side by side to form a single round log.

Lightly press the three strips into a single log, then place the tri-color log into your cookie press.

Choose a disc for the press that creates a burst-like shape—something more floral or rounded can resemble a falling firework when baked. Press the cookies onto an ungreased sheet and bake until just set.

After baking, keep the cookies on the cookie sheet and dust them lightly with edible glitter using a small food-safe brush. Tap a little glitter into the center of each cookie, then fan it outward with the brush for a delicate, festive sheen. Once decorated, transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to finish cooling.

Decorating tip

The final look depends on how you place the colored dough into the press. Two simple methods give distinct effects:

Version #1: Place the three colored strips in a straight line so the colors remain defined and separated in each cookie.

Version #1

Version #2: Twist the three strips slightly before pressing. This produces a more blended, tie-dye effect where the colors mix softly.

Version #2

These cookies freeze very well, so you can make them ahead and store them in an airtight container in the freezer. Thaw them on the counter before serving for best texture.
